Sustainabilityinformed dietetics education: key messages for educators and national dietetics associations

The Global Networking Event on Sustainable Food Systems in Nutrition and Dietetics Education took place in June 2023, aiming to build international relationships and develop shared curricula. Current dietetics programs often fall short in preparing the future workforce for sustainable, healthy food systems.

Over two days, plenary lectures, panels, and roundtable discussions provided the background needed to generate informed actions. Key messages were summarized in a report to guide educators and national dietetics associations.

Key Findings:

Inconsistent Competency Requirements: Sustainable food system (SFS) competencies and curricular integration vary globally and lack strong frameworks.
Scope of Practice: There's a need to clearly define the role of dietitians in SFS.
Educational Opportunities: Enhance existing topics with sustainability pedagogies, leverage transferrable skills for future SFS roles, and establish interdisciplinary food systems teaching.
Support from National Associations: National dietetics associations can support the integration of SFS into dietitians' professional roles.

As a result, ICDA hosted an insightful workshop during ICND2024 that aimed to inspire National Dietetic Associations to prioritize Sustainable Food Systems on their agendas.
