EFAD Celebrated International Older Adults Day on October 1st

On October 1st, EFAD proudly marked International Older Adults Day as part of our wider Malnutrition Awareness Week campaign. Older adults are a vulnerable group, and together with the ESDN Older Adults group, we highlighted the essential role of early malnutrition screening in enhancing care, preventing complications, and improving the quality of life for this population.

🚨 Early screening for malnutrition in older adults is essential. It helps prevent complications, reduces hospital stays, and enhances the overall well-being of older individuals. Dietitians play a crucial role in providing timely and personalized nutrition care, making a significant difference in the lives of older adults.

Let's continue to raise awareness and support the health of older adults by promoting early intervention and emphasizing the vital role dietitians have in their care. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on their quality of life!

EFAD's Malnutrition Awareness Week 2024 Continues: Spotlight on ESDN Oncology

As part of Malnutrition Awareness Week 2024, we highlight the essential role of ESDN Oncology in addressing malnutrition among cancer patients.

Key Messages for Healthcare Professionals from ESDN Oncology:

  • Early identification of malnutrition in oncology is crucial—make malnutrition screening an integral part of the cancer care pathway.
  • Oncology dietitians play an indispensable role in the multidisciplinary cancer care team, delivering tailored nutritional interventions that enhance clinical outcomes and improve patient quality of life.
  • Malnutrition significantly impacts healthcare costs. Early intervention is life-saving and cost-effective, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Diving into Dietetic Research: New European Study Reveals Key Insights

Research is the backbone of dietetics, guiding evidence-based practice across the profession. EFAD’s Research and Evidence-Based Practice Committee conducted a groundbreaking study, now published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics to understand better how engaged European dietitians are in research.

The committee sought to fill a knowledge gap by exploring dietitians' involvement in research activities across Europe. The findings reveal key insights into regional differences, the impact of education levels, and areas where more support is needed.

🗝️ Key Findings:

  • Research involvement varies by region, with dietitians in Northern and Southern Europe reporting higher engagement compared to those in Eastern and Western Europe.
  • Education plays a role: Dietitians with doctoral degrees are far more involved in research compared to those with bachelor’s or master’s qualifications.
  • Despite qualifications, there’s room for growth in areas such as research budgeting and mentoring.

This study gives us a valuable snapshot of the state of dietetic research across Europe and identifies where improvements can be made to bridge the gap between education and practice.

The German example of integrating sustainability in dietetic courses

EFAD is proud to share an inovative initiative introduced by Manuela Thul, delegate of our member organization, the German Association of Dietitians (VDD), at ICND 2024. This project presents a 60-hour ready-to-use curriculum designed to incorporate Planetary Health (Diet) and sustainability into dietetic education.

This unique curriculum not only provides theoretical background but also emphasizes the practical implementation of sustainability both in dietetic practice and the students’ daily lives. It includes a detailed schedule, extensive presentations, and videos for lecturers, ensuring a comprehensive approach to teaching.

Developed through the collaboration of KLUG e.V. (German Association on Climate Change and Health), VDD e.V. (EFAD’s full member), and the School of Dietitians at the University Hospital Münster, this project was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU).

The curriculum and materials are available in the members section of the VDD website.

WCRF: Alcohol Policy Recommendations to Reduce Cancer Risk

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) outlines policy measures aimed at reducing alcohol-related harms through their publication, Our Policy Position: Alcohol and Cancer Risk. They advocate for all countries to develop, implement, and/or strengthen their alcohol policies, strategies, or action plans to support a population-level reduction in alcohol consumption. These policies may be executed as a series of interventions or, ideally, incorporated into comprehensive national or subnational alcohol strategies or guidelines.

The EASO Obesity Taxonomy

The EASO obesity taxonomy consists of six themes: Definition of obesity; Causes, onset and progression factors, Obesity prevention, Screening and early diagnosis; Treatment and management; and Obesity consequences. The themes are subdivided into concepts, with each concept further broken down into a definition, scope, and context layer.

Each theme is further divided into concepts that include a definition, scope, and context layer. This comprehensive structure helps stakeholders—healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers—speak a common language, ensuring consistent classification, diagnosis, and treatment of obesity. By reducing misunderstandings and inconsistencies, the taxonomy ultimately enhances patient care and facilitates effective collaboration across sectors.
