The EFAD-ESPEN Working Group was established by EFAD in 2019 to increase dietetic collaboration with the ESPEN community. The working group has developed a questionnaire to gather insight into which source of information European Dietitians and Dietetic Students use within their dietetic practice, how dietitians use the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) guidelines, and if the ESPEN guidelines should have an addendum for dietitians that focuses on the practical implementation of the ESPEN guidelines. I would like to invite you to this issue of Kompass Nutrition & Dietetics. This time, our focus is on Nutrition in Vulnerable Populations, a broad topic but of great importance.
In 2023, we celebrated 75 years since the foundation of the World Health Organization with a full year designated to ensuring Equal Access to Health for All. In 2024, we are invited to consider that when access to health is not a constitutional right, at least 4.5 billion people (more than half of the world’s population) are not receiving full health coverage. ... I hope you enjoy this issue and embrace the invitation to see dietetic practice as a way of ensuring and promoting food security. As part of the nutritional care process, we dietitians are frontline workers in identifying and addressing food insecurity in both clinical and community settings, and this issue wishes to help readers feel more empowered to embark on this journey.

The Dis4Food Project - Kick-Off in Athens

Dis4Food, an ERASMUS+ funded project, aspires to ensure that dietitians will become part of the digital disruption in diet and food. The project brings together food data experts from the Laboratory of Food Chemistry & Analysis of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), and dietitians from EFAD to equip dietitians with essential digital skills in food data literacy. ENHA calls for Health Equity in the EU The European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) launched its Manifesto for Health Equity in the European Union (EU). This manifesto addresses the critical issue of health disparities and malnutrition across EU Member States and outlines key recommendations to prioritize patient-centered care, integrate nutritional support within healthcare systems, and combat malnutrition effectively. EFAD proudly supports and endorses the Manifesto which calls upon the upcoming EU mandate (2024-2029) to develop a comprehensive strategy on nutritional care that builds upon the EFAD Budapest Resolution & Vienna Declaration, on nutritional care as a human right. Recommendations for communication about healthy & sustainable eating to consumers with low socio-economic status EUFIC, in collaboration with the social service organisation Caritas Trieste in Italy, recently conducted research with consumers with low socioeconomic status (natives and migrants), including beneficiaries of food banks, to understand how we should communicate to these groups about healthy and sustainable eating and empower them to make the diet shift.
