Spotlight: ESDN for Public Health Committee

An update on what the committee has been working on.

2021 has been a very productive year. Thanks to the commitment of members Teresa Rodrigues, Amanda Avery, Elena Carrillo, Begüm Kalyoncu, Claudia Afonso and Manuel Moñino, the group has participated in many European projects and public consultations.

  • EFAD became an observer member of the CODEX Alimentarius this year, which we have led on. We have participated in two standards consultations so far: food allergen labelling and follow-up formula.
  • Our Nutrient Profile policy fact sheet has been published.
  • We moved forward with a fiscal measures policy paper and a guideline to promote healthy snacks based on the nutrient profiling model in collaboration with the ESDN Obesity Committee.
  • We are part of the advisory board for Sustainable Dietary Patterns for the upcoming EFAD education platform.
  • We wrote an article on "Food Insecurity and Malnutrition" for the Kompass Nutrition & Dietetics journal, which you can read here.
  • We led on the European Public Health Week partnership with EUPHA and organised a webinar on "All for one health", with more than 300 attendees, which you can watch back here.
  • The FOOD-EPI project we participated in issued its final report.
  • We produced a position on the newly launched EU Code of Conduct on Responsible Food Business and Marketing Practices and a response to the European Commission public consultation on Facilitating healthier food choices – establishing nutrient profiles and front-of-package nutrition labelling.
  • We answered two WHO consultations, "Total fat intake for adults and children" and the call to support the European Programme of Work (2020-2025) - “United Action for Better Health in Europe” .
  • We also responded to a prioritisation survey for the development of a science-informed guideline on the integrated management of infants and young children obesity.

Article spotlight - "Detection and Management of Malnutrition in Primary Care"

Kompass Journal front cover

Once identified, malnutrition can be effectively treated in the majority of cases with dietary advice and the prescription of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) for patients who can eat and drink orally.

However, previous research has reported inadequate screening and treatment of malnutrition in the community.

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore general practitioners’ experiences and opinions on the management of malnutrition and the prescription of ONS in the primary care/community setting in Ireland.

What effect has COVID-19 had on maternal and child undernutrition and child mortality in low- and middle-income countries?

Standing Together for Nutrition Consortium (ST4N) research on the COVID-19 crisis and maternal and child undernutrition and child mortality was published in Nature Food last week.

Dr. Saskia Osendarp, Executive Director of Micronutrient Forum and ST4N co-convenor said: "The findings of the research estimate that an unprecedented nutrition crisis is looming, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating in many low- and middle-income countries.

"An additional 13.6 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition, and 3.6 million more children may be stunted by 2022. This will have an everlasting impact on their lives, families and countries from one generation to the next.

"Unfortunately, like in any crisis, women and children are disproportionally affected. We have solutions to correct the course and must include them in COVID-19 recovery planning."
