Learn about Sustainability this September
|
|
|
This September, EFAD is welcoming you to a series of two webinars on Sustainable and Healthy Diets. The first webinar, taking place on 16 September, will introduce the concept and pillars of sustainability as well as the context and challenges of sustainable diets. The second webinar (29 September) will present the European Farm to Fork strategy and other global initiatives towards more sustainable food systems.

EFAD hosts two symposia at ICD2021
|
|
|
EFAD held two symposia at the ICD 2021 Virtual Congress last week. The first, Hydration Resources for dietitians, discussed the development and implementation of the European Healthy Hydration Awareness Campaign (EuHHAC) Hydration Resources for dietitians and nutritionists and updated scientific evidence on hydration. The second, Advancing Dietetics in Europe through Collaboration, covered working with membership volunteers to achieve association goals, a model for good practice on advocating for nutrition and dietetics, and the dietitian's perspective on the prevention of malnutrition in senior subjects in the EU.

Spotlight: Professional Practice Committee (PPC)
|
|
|
|
An update on what the committee has been working on:
- The PPC has finished a case study, “A comparison of a patient with diabetes between the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and its terminology and the Dietetic Care Process (DCP) and its terminology."
- It has been working on communications for the use and adoption of standardised language.
- The committee will hold a webinar in February 2022, involving committee member Jose Tiebie, Sytske Runia and a dietitian working with NCP.
- The committee will start a discussion group on outcomes in dietetics treatment and interdisciplinary treatment in patient care.
- The PPC will be working on a number of projects over the coming months, including a policy paper on cost-effectiveness in dietetics, a mission and vision paper, an update of the supplement to the ICDA's Code of Ethics and a dashboard page on the new EFAD website.

Article spotlight - "Association Between Malnutrition and Sarcopenia During Hospitalisation in Older People: A Challenge in Rehabilitation"
|
|
|
Very little is known about the effect of malnutrition on short-term changes of body composition, particularly muscle, among older hospitalised patients. This knowledge transfer by Sousana Papadopoulou (Thessaloniki, City) discusses how the combination of limited choices regarding meals and lack of physical activity constitutes a crucial risk factor for sarcopenia.

More than 700 million people with untreated hypertension
The number of adults aged 30–79 years with hypertension has increased from 650 million to 1.28 billion in the last thirty years, according to the first comprehensive global analysis of trends in hypertension prevalence, detection, treatment and control, led by Imperial College London and WHO. Nearly half of these people did not know they had hypertension. Find out more.

Encouraging Europeans to choose safe food
The European Food Safety Authority #EUChooseSafeFood campaign aims to raise awareness about the science behind our food and tell the story of the scientists who work to make sure it’s safe. Its overall goal is to encourage citizens to think critically about their everyday food choices. The campaign is targeting citizens aged 25-45, with an extra focus on women and young parents across Europe and with a particular focus this year on nine EU countries: Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain. EFSA Public consultation on sugar consumption study closes this month
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)'s panel on nutrition has completed its provisional assessment of the safety of dietary sugars following a comprehensive scientific review. Valeriu Curtui, head of EFSA’s Nutrition Unit, said: “This has been a hugely challenging work so far, involving the evaluation of over 30,000 publications. Our experts and staff have made an immense effort to reach this point and applied the highest standards of scientific rigour throughout.” EFSA will hold a public meeting to discuss the draft opinion on 21 September and a public consultation will run until 30 September. Companies 'must do more' to reduce obesity in Belgium
Belgian food companies have taken steps to help improve obesity rates and promote healthy diets, but they can play a much bigger role than they do now, according to a new report by Belgium's national public health institute, Sciensano. The report states that one in two Belgian adults are living with overweight or obesity. It highlights what specific food companies are currently doing, or can improve on, in relation to obesity and nutrition. Find out more and access the report here.

World Café: Let's talk about childhood obesity 14 September 1pm CET

|
By 2030, 254 million children could be living with obesity. True and lasting effects to positively impact youth health, including overweight and obesity, will not only need to include young people’s input, perspective, and suggestions; the initiative and leadership of young people themselves needs to be part of the answer. This event will showcase how the CO-CREATE dialogue forum tool will be used to convene youth and stakeholders to discuss meaningful youth engagement and inclusion. EASO Masterclass Series October

The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) has three training courses available in October:
Up to 40 places are available for each course. Applications are invited from HCPs working in European countries who hold a Master's/PhD degree in a relevant topic and/or have three to five years of relevant practical experience. Priority will be given to applicants who are members of EASO affiliated National Associations. Application is free. The deadline is 12 September.
