World Food Day, October 16 -

Leaving No One Behind

On World Food Day, EFAD reflected on the 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which emphasizes that every European citizen should have access to safe and appropriate nutritional care provided by dietitians. This commitment aligns with our vision for a healthier population, ensuring no one is left behind.

Yet, the global picture reminds us of persistent hunger. According to FAO, despite producing enough food to feed the world, around 733 million people still face hunger, exacerbated by weather shocks, conflicts, economic challenges, inequality, and the pandemic. This deeply impacts vulnerable communities, many of whom are agricultural households, highlighting the widening disparities across and within nations.

In Europe, Food Insecurity is also a growing concern, highlighting the urgency of addressing these inequalities and ensuring that everyone regardless, has the right to adequate and nutritious food.

On this day, let’s renew our efforts to ensure that everyone, everywhere, can exercise their right to adequate food - a fundamental human right - and strive to support sustainable and resilient food systems for all.

EFAD's General Meeting in Barcelona

Highlights included welcoming the Slovenian National Dietetic Association, presenting and approving the 2023 Annual Report, re-electing Sharleen O'Reilly as REBPC Chair, and honoring Naomi Trostler with EFAD Honorary Membership.

Members shared updates on their national activities, while workshops on Food Data Literacy Gaps and Integrated Nutritional Care provided valuable insights for future initiatives. The meeting emphasized collaboration and the continued development of the dietetic profession across Europe.

Healthy Diets on a Budget: Financially Relevant Nutrition Education Improves the Impact of Food Vouchers on Dietary Habits

Diet quality shows a clear social gradient with people living in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods exhibiting food choices with higher energy density and lower nutrient density. Price and affordability become increasingly important factors for food choices with decreasing household income, at the expense of a negative impact on health. As foods high in sugar, fat, and salt are more likely to be sold under promotions and discounts, covering the economic gap towards healthier food choices through food vouchers has been employed as a public health measure.
