EFAD ESDN Diabetes experts contribute to World Diabetes Day
Sunday 14 November was World Diabetes Day, a global awareness day to highlight the condition which affects 537 million adults worldwide. The theme for this year was 'Access to patient care'. International Sweeteners Association (ISA) worked with the EFAD European Specialist Dietetic Network (ESDN) for Diabetes to produce a series of video interviews to further highlight the crucial role dietitians and nutritionists can play. The videos aim to raise awareness of diabetes - and the need for greater access to care, including nutrition care, around the world. ESDN Diabetes members Dr Haris Dimosthenopoulos, MMedSci., PhD, Clinical Dietitian (Greece), Dr Zoe Pafili, RD, PhD, Clinical Dietitian (Greece), Dr Maria Vasiloglou M(Med)Sc, PhD, Dietitian-Nutritionist (Switzerland) and Marina Armellini, Dietitian (Italy) all took part. An update on what the REBPC has been working on.
Project updates
REBPC has been busy developing a research project over the past year and we are delighted to launch it this week. The project aims to look at research capacity and involvement at the individual and department level among the nutrition and dietetics workforce across Europe. It builds on the work settings survey and report that the REBPC produced in 2020. We are looking for dietitians across Europe to give us around five minutes of their time to complete this simple survey.

REBPC has been successful in obtaining funding for a research project looking at European Dietetic Innovations in Routine Practice in response to COVID-19. The project work will commence shortly and we will keep EFAD members up to date as the project progresses.

Nutrition and COVID-19 recovery knowledge hub launches
A new ‘one stop shop’ has been launched to help people manage post-COVID symptoms through nutritional care. The Nutrition and COVID-19 recovery knowledge hub is hosted by EFAD Education Associate Member, the University of Plymouth, and supported by the British Dietetic Association General Education Trust. Aimed at health professionals and the general public alike, it’s the only resource of its kind – enabling people with ongoing difficulties to find evidence-based nutritional resources, advice on symptoms and answers to common questions online. ESPEN guideline on hospital nutrition
In hospitals throughout Europe and worldwide, hospital diet practices are not consistent. Prescriptions are mostly based on arbitrary non-scientific reasons or caregivers’ personal beliefs. This can lead to decreased energy delivery and increased risk of malnutrition. The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) Guideline on Hospital Nutrition has been published, which proposes evidence-based recommendations in order to:
- Improve medical, dietetic and nurse prescriptions of hospital diets.
- Reduce the risk of hospital malnutrition.
- Improve awareness of ALL hospital staff (including directions) towards the pivotal role of nutritional care at hospital.

Are diets that are better for the planet also better for our health?
Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Imperial College London, and partner institutions have found that diets including foods that require higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions or that require larger areas of land for their production are associated with higher rates of all-cause mortality, cause-specific mortality, and cancer. The results were published in The Lancet Planetary Health. Read the full story.

Stay up-to-date with the Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care thematic network

The European Nutrition for Health Alliance's "Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care" was chosen as one of three 2021 Thematic Networks on the EU Health Policy Platform earlier this year. Created in collaboration with EFAD, ENDietS and a number of other organisations, it focuses on the need for integrated nutrition care for cancer patients. Nutrition app aimed at giving cancer patients nutritional guidance launches
|
|
|
Nutrition for digestive cancer patients is a very important factor for them while traversing treatment and recovery. Between 40 to 80% of cancer patients are in a state of malnutrition, which leads to poorer quality of life, possible negative effects on treatment efficacy and how well patients are able to tolerate their treatments. European Public Health Alliance: Discovering the role of food environments for sustainable food systems
This policy briefing, written in the framework of the EU Food Policy Coalition, describes the central role that food environments play in shaping food consumption and their potential to leverage a healthy food system transformation. It presents a vision for enabling food environments and calls on public authorities to step up their role by identifying seven areas for action. Find out more and read the briefing in full.

Final call: 2021 EU Health Award
The European Commission has launched the 2021 EU Health Award on the following topics:
- Cancer prevention: rewarding initiatives of cities, NGOs (or other civil society organisations) and educational institutions seeking to promote communication and health literacy on cancer prevention among children and young people (6 to 24 years old).
- Mental health: rewarding community-based initiatives alleviating the mental health impact of COVID-19.
Check the criteria and present details of your initiative by 30 November, using this online submission form. The winners and shortlisted in each category will receive prizes ranging from €1,500 to €30,000.
