EFAD News

A letter from EFAD Executive Director Judith Liddell

It is with really mixed feelings that I have decided to resign as Executive Director of EFAD.

EFAD has grown incredibly since I joined 23 years ago and it has been my absolute pleasure to grow with it. I have loved getting to know colleagues from all across Europe and I’ve taken great pleasure in supporting the growth of EFAD’s standing committees, specialist networks, student network and congress – which now all contribute so much to the advancement of dietetics across Europe.

It has also been my privilege to represent EFAD at the WHO, the European Commission and to many other stakeholders. I’ve greatly enjoyed working with five EFAD presidents, many wonderful Executive Committee members and EFAD’s exceptional office staff, project manager and project officers. The role of Executive Director would have been impossible without the unfailing support of all of them.

I know that EFAD will continue to grow and to advocate for dietetics across the European region and I hope to continue to contribute, albeit in a much smaller role, because I still have many things I wish to achieve outside dietetics and I don’t wish to delay starting on them any longer.

I’d like to thank you for all your support over the wonderful years we’ve shared together.

Kindest regards, as always,

Judith Liddell
EFAD Executive Director

Dear all,

It is with regret that we have to say goodbye to Judith after so many years.

We are so grateful to Judith for her excellent work in EFAD. It is thanks to her insights into European dietetics, and her enthusiasm and hard work over 23 years, that EFAD has grown to the organisation it is today. Thank you Judith!

Now we have to find a successor who is able to continue this important work. Please spread this exciting job opportunity in your network - we are happy to welcome applications at short notice!

Annemieke van Ginkel-Res
EFAD Honorary President

EFAD responds to WHO consultation on total intake of fats for adults and children

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence reviews indicate that obesity is an important, independent prognostic factor for many non-communicable diseases, and patients with obesity are at increased risk for adverse outcomes of COVID-19.

The WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety has developed updated guidance on total fat intake. EFAD's European Specialist Dietetic Network (ESDN) for Public Health has submitted a response, which you can read here.

Spotlight: ESDN Diabetes Committee

An update on what the ESDN Diabetes Committee has been working on.

  • The main project is the review of the clinical guidelines for the prevention and nutritional management of diabetes in European member countries. We have gathered the official guidelines by the medical and dietetic associations and diabetes associations and the Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group of European Association for the Study of Diabetes, aiming to produce official guidelines and recommendations for dietitians in Europe.
  • We are planning two webinars. The first webinar will be on gestational diabetes and the second on topics related to meal planning, the order of macro-nutrients in the diet for diabetes and the suggested number of meals.
  • We are preparing a revision of the EFAD ESDN Diabetes Statement Paper on the Role of the Dietitian in the Prevention and Management of Gestational and Type 2 Diabetes.
  • ESDN Diabetes will take part in the 13th EFAD Congress Scientific Programme Committee (ECSPC).
