Dear colleagues and friends, I hope the new year has started prosperously for all of you. At EFAD we are back to work and we look forward to meeting and working with you in 2023. Last week, the Executive Committee discussed the 2023 work plan and concluded that we are on the right track and excited to continue the work and explore new options to achieve our strategic goals. This year's first activity, a webinar organised by ESDN Diabetes on "Diet management and sports in people with type 1 diabetes" was successfully held. If you missed it, you can watch it on demand at the EFAD Learning platform. We plan to develop more webinars and new learning courses this year. Keep tuned via our Newsflash and social media.

What are our Specialists (ESDNs) Networks working on? The example of ESDN Public Health
As the primary goal of EFAD is to improve nutritional health and promote sustainable diets in Europe, Sustainable Dietary Patterns is standing in the focus of the work of the European Specialist Dietetic Network for Public Health Committee (ESDN PH). The ESDN PH takes part in public consultations and surveys issued by the concerned European bodies. In the context of the ‘‘European Green Deal”, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive Farm to Fork Strategy, which recognises the inextricable links between healthy people, healthy societies and a healthy planet. The Strategy recognises that the individual and sector-specific actions can neither alone, nor in combination with each other fully ensure policy coherence at the EU and national level, so they launched a public consultation in order to gather opinions and evidence from the public and relevant stakeholders on the key issues, the initiative aims to address. The ESDN PH took part in this consultation, highlighting, that for achieving effective and equitable change, the legislative framework should establish responsibilities on food businesses and public authorities, creating the appropriate conditions for different players to change their activities. The ESDN PH produced a Position Paper on Sustainable Dietary Patterns, which was accepted in 2021 October. The paper points out, that sustainable diets are complex rather than simple, as they must address a lot of aspects. These include health and wellbeing; environmental pressure and impact; accessible, affordable, safe and equitable supply; cultural acceptance and localization; as well as standards on animal welfare. Read the Position Paper.

Health authorities increasingly recommend a more plant-based diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, pulses, whole grains and nuts, low in red meat and moderate in dairy, eggs, poultry and fish which will be beneficial for both health and the environment. A systematic review of observational and intervention studies published between 2000 and January 2020 was conducted to assess nutrient intake and status in adult populations consuming plant-based diets with that of meat-eaters.
